According to Le Soir, a survey conducted by Camille revealed that six out of ten parents in Wallonia experience high levels of stress. This stress stems from various sources, influenced by their living situations and the challenges they are currently facing. Among these, three primary sources of struggle emerge, with every family encountering at least one of them.
The first is the challenge of balancing household chores with childcare, a stressor that 61% of families report as a significant source of daily pressure. This is followed by financial pressures related to meeting children's needs, which 57% of families acknowledge as a major concern. Lastly, 57% of families also cite the difficulty of balancing time for their children with personal moments.
It is understood that each family copes with stress in their own way, with some focusing on self-care routines to alleviate pressure, others relying on friends or extended family for support, and some seeking guidance from financial advisors or community resources to manage economic challenges. The common solutions employed are primarily external in nature. As a result, the emotional well-being of families has become increasingly dependent on external factors, such as close relationships. This dependence is further emphasized by a staggering 91% of parents who report that societal and employer recognition of their fatigue is grossly underestimated, highlighting the urgent need for greater understanding and support for families under stress.
It is evident that stress not only affects the behavior and emotions of parents but can also have a detrimental impact on children. Parental stress increases the risk of verbal or physical abuse and negatively influences children's behavior and mental health.
